FairyTale: A True Story

The Cottingley Fairies
“There are fairies at the bottom of our garden,” announces the opening line of a poem by Rose Fyleman first published in 1917. Coincidentally, that was also the year two intelligent and talented young conspirators managed to convince some very well-known people that there really were fairies living near Cottingley Beck, the stream that ran past the foot of their garden.

The Case of the Cottingley Fairies

The cousins were both still alive in the 1980s, and finally Elsie confessed to the hoax, probably with some relief, in 1983. What had undoubtedly started out as a cleverly stage-managed bit of fun, suggested by Frances, had got seriously out of hand. The cousins themselves were astonished at how readily people of the calibre of Conan-Doyle had accepted the images. Perhaps not wholly wanting to relinquish the story, Frances maintained all her life that “Fairies and their Sunbath”, the fifth and last image, showed real fairies, not fakes.

Elsie admitted that all five of the photographs had been faked. Frances also admitted to the hoax, but has always maintained that the final photograph was real. Both Elsie and Frances insisted that despite the faked photos there were real fairies around the Cottingley beck, and they used to play with them as children.

Selbst und gerade wenn die Fotos gefälscht waren. Die Kinder haben etwas gesehen, wie sie sagten, was keiner glauben mochte, und man glaubte ihnen dann (zumindest dann manche), als sie es mit anerkannten Mitteln "beweisen" konnten. Es ging dann nur noch darum, ob die "Beweise" echt sind.
